The US Marines in Belleau Wood

Read more Read less

Take an unforgettable day trip from Paris and retrace the steps of the U.S. troops who fought in France during WWI. On this tour you’ll visit the famous Belleau Woods where the US Marine Corps forged its reputation as Devil Dogs, sip some Champagne, explore the little country town of Chateau-Thierry, and pay your respects to many fallen heroes at two important US cemeteries.

On this tour you’ll learn all about the US involvement in France during WWI. Your expert guide will share details about the training of the troops, their deployment in France, and all of their most important battles. You’ll visit notable memorials and hear the personal stories of the brave men who fought in the trenches and fell in France. You’ll also be able to attend the Taps ceremony at Belleau Woods cemetery.

The US portion of the western front was located in the beautiful Champagne region of France. There, winemakers have been making their famous sparkling wine for over 300 years. It would be a shame to visit this lovely region of France without experiencing its local charm. So our day trip also includes a visit to a local Champagne house. There you’ll learn about the process of making Champagne and, of course, taste some of this famous sparkling wine.

Visit the fallen; remember their bravery

Meet with your guide in central Paris and take a drive through the French countryside to the Champagne Region. You’ll ride in comfort in our brand new, luxury, minibus with leather seats and A/C. You’ll enjoy the scenery as you get to know your guide and the other people on this small group day trip. The drive itself will last about an hour and twenty minutes.

Your first stop of the day will be at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. Here just over 6000 Americans rest in peace. During your tour of the cemetery you’ll learn about why WWI broke out, how it became “the war of the trenches”, and why the US joined the war in 1917. Not far from the cemetery is the crash site of Theodore Roosevelt’s youngest son, Quentin Roosevelt. We’ll make a special stop at his crash site to commemorate this remarkable young man.

Champagne cellar & tasting

For lunch there will be an hour long break in the charming little town of Chateau-Thierry. There you’ll be able to wander the little streets and choose to eat at one of the dozen great cafés, restaurants, or bakeries that suit your taste and budget. After lunch there will be a visit to a famous house of Champagne where you will tour the grounds and learn about the Champagne making process!

Your guide will give you a good introduction to Champagne, how it differs from other white wines, and why it tastes so good. After a full visit of the13th century wine cellar you’ll participate in a tasting of their most famous cuvée. If the weather allows it your guide will then take you onto the dirt paths of the vineyards while on your way to the Château-Thierry American Monument that overlooks the Marne river.

Belleau Woods and the US Marines

The impressive Chateau-Thierry American Monument (also known as the American Aisne-Marne Memorial) stands high on the “Hill 204”. From this vantage point you’ll see many important battle sites and learn about them as your guide shares detailed maps and attack plans with you. Inside of the monument itself you’ll visit a newly opened museum that highlights the history of those who fought in the Second Battle of the Marne.

Afterwards, your guide will lead you to the site of the U.S. Marine Corps most fiercely fought battle; Belleau Woods. You’ll walk through Belleau Woods seeing what remains of the trenches they fought in and visit the humble US Marine Monument. Then you’ll visit the tranquil Aisne-Marne cemetery at the bottom of the woods where you will participate in the Taps ceremony before heading back to Paris.
